This bird of prey has a sparse and irregular distribution around the western Palearctic region (Arroyo et al. 1995) it’s present in European countries such as Albania, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Turkey, Portugal and Spain.
These last two countries gather the most important populations with 84 to 94 pairs in Portugal (Palma et al. 1998) and 679 to 755 pairs in Spain (Arroyo et al. 1995).
Together with Morocco, the Iberian Peninsula presents the most representative numbers of the Western Palearctic (Arroyo et al. 1992).
The specie’s effective is estimated in about 938 to 1039 couples in the entire European continent, being affected by a clear regression in most one of them (Real et al. 1996).
In our country, the species is confined to two strong nucleus of major importance, one in the south and the other in the northeast, with a sparse and fragmented distribution in the rest of the territory.
In 1999, the population of the northeast of Portugal was estimated in about 30 breeding pairs (Fráguas 1999). However, for the present date, there are about 21-23 breeding couples that reflect a declining rate in the order of 23 to 30% for the period of 9 years.
